What is the difference between DTG and DTF printing?

DTG printing

With advancements in technology, the printing industry has witnessed a significate transformation in recent years. Traditional printing methods have made way for more innovative techniques, such as DTG (Direct-to-Garment) and DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing. These methods have revolutionised the way we print designs onto fabric, making the process more efficient and cost-effective. While both techniques share similarities, they also have distinct differences that set them apart.

So what is DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing?

DTG printing, as the name suggests, is a process where ink is directly printing onto fabric using a specialised inkjet printer. This technique is best suited for small-scale orders or personalised prints. DTG printing offers numerous advantages, such as the ability to print intricate designs with a wide range of colours and gradients. It is also great for designs that require a high level of detail. Moreover, the final print feels soft to touch as the ink is absorbed into the fabric.

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing

DTF printing involves transferring the design onto a specialised film, which is then heat transferred onto the fabric. This method is primarily used for bulk printing due to its cost-effectiveness and time-efficiency. DTF printing allows for greater flexibility in terms of the types of fabrics that can be printed on, including polyester, nylon, and leather. It is particularly popular for printing sportswear, custom designs and large scale orders. Compared to DTG printing, DTF printing offers vibrant and long-lasting printed with excellent colour saturation and opacity.

What are the differences?

One significant difference between DTG and DTF printing lies in the colour capabilities. DTG printing allows for a broader spectrum of colours, including gradiants and various shades. This is because the ink is directly printed onto the fabric, allowing for precise colour application. In contrast, DTF printing may struggle with colour reproduction, primarily if the design includes intriciate details or a wide range of colours.

Another factor to consider is the durability of the prints. DTG prints tend to be more prone to fading after repeated washes, especially if they are not cared for properly. DTF prints are more durable and resistant to fading, making them ideal for garments that undergo regular washing or high levels of wear and tear.

Production speed

DTF printing  generally takes less time compared to DTG printing. This is because DTF requires less preparation and can be used for mass production, allowing for quicker turnaround times. DTG printing, however, requires more times for set up, as the printer needs to precieslt algin the desgin onto the fabric.

Both DTG and DTF printing techniques have their advantages and limitations, and the choice between the two largely depends on the specific requirements of the print order. DTG is better suited for small scale orders that require intricate designs and a wide range of colours. DTF, on the other hand, is the go to option for bulk prints, offering vibrant and long-lasting prints on a variety of fabrics.

Ultimately, it is essential to consider factors such as design complexity, colour requirements, durability and production speed to determine which method best suits your printing needs.

The basic T-shirt is a perfect choice for when you need cheap custom T-shirts for one off events and promotions, birthday parties, joke presents, silly birthday gifts, workwear, team building exercises, and a load of other reasons.

What you get with a Basic T-shirt

If you go for a basic T-shirt you can expect to receive a ringspun cotton T-shirt of about 150gsm printed professionally, up to 29x40cm in full colour either on the front or back.
You can have your own design printed on a T-shirt, a photograph printed on a T-shirt, text and logos, artwork, kids’ pictures, quotes, the list is too extensive.

Not only are we at Teepig freezing the price of a basic personalised T-shirt we actually improving the quality of the T-shirt too. Previously we were using Fruit of the Loom Original T-shirts as our basic style. Opinion here, but I quite honestly believe it’s the original style that gives Fruit of the Loom a bad name amongst some. This is because the Original, however cheap, is a far cry from the Fruit of the Loom Premium T-shirt. Or as it’s now named the 195 Iconic. This remains a recommended and used style.
We do believe it’s important to have a clear difference between our basic T-shirt style and the next choice up. However that doesn’t mean we are offering an inferior T-shirt and print for only £10. On the contrary, the Casual Classics 150 T-shirt is comparable to our most popular T-shirt, the Gildan Softstyle.
The main difference when it comes to the printing process is that our basic T-shirt is not pretreated, where as the premium, softstyle and other styles are pretreated. This means that before we lay down colour we pretreat the T-shirt. The result is a more vibrant print. Not only that but the print lasts longer too. It can survive several washes and still look great.

Alternatives to Basic T-shirt

The next choice up in standard is the Softstyle. As mentioned before, there isn’t a huge amount of difference between the T-shirts, just the pretreat. So if you’re looking for a great value T-shirt which you’d like to keep and wear for as long as possible then this is a good contender. Our top recommendations for quality T-shirts are the Anthem Organic and the Premium.

Will my Christmas Delivery get to me on time?

Teepig will be printing your custom T-shirts and hoodies right up until Christmas. Unfortunately because of Royal Mail strikes and the pressure put on the whole industry, deliveries of your custom orders may be delayed. Our advice would be to get your order in as early as possible. We can’t promise they’ll get to you in time. Although we now offer a courier service. So there is a better chance your custom printed T-shirt will arrive to you in time.
To hasten your Christmas delivery please consider choosing white or black softstyle t-shirts which we have in stock and can print sooner. We don’t hold stock of everything we offer. Most of it we order from our suppliers which is why we allow 5-7 days to turnaround your order. Of course at this time of year anyway delays are expected. Furthermore with the added turmoil of Royal Mail strikes it is even more difficult to predict when your order will arrive. We can only apologise, plead for your patience and advise some consideration about your choices. Frankly, we just don’t know when you can expect your Christmas delivery.
If you’re happy to wait for your order then our standard delivery with Royal Mail is still the best choice. Of course, if you live in or around Bristol you can always drop in to see us in Portishead. This is where we print and embroider T-shirts, hoodies, sweaters and much more. You can even see for yourself the samples of garments we use and recommend.

Portishead Skatepark Crowdfunding

Teepig is proud to support the campaign to get Portishead a new skatepark.
As of July 2022 planning permission for the skatepark has been granted by North Somerset Council. Great, that’s the hard bit done. Now it’s time to get the funding. This is where Teepig is here to help the community.
An online Portishead Skatepark Crowdfunding page is set up to collect the generous contributions from members of the community.  The page, as well as the campaign, is managed by the Portishead WASP group. WASP is the acronym for Wheels And Skate Park.
With each significant contribution comes a reward. So  a £25 donation can reward the contributor with a printed Trucker cap or T-shirt with the WASP logo or the ‘Portishred’ logo. The latter designed by Sam Roberts. Sam, a graphic designer now living locally in Clevedon, won a design competition to come up with the apparel logo for the campaign. By wearing your WASP hoodie, caps beanie and T-shirt you will help spread the word.
It’s been a long time coming and now closer than ever. Along with community funding the WASP group is applying for grants to push the project over the line.
